Dee stood as Soren entered the room. She had to give the woman credit. Dee had a fighting spirit Soren admired. Soren had read all the reports from the early days of the virus. Diana Gee featured heavily in several accounts of battling the beasts. Pity. Soren would have liked her to join the Keepers. She could use someone like her. She got stuff done.

“Have they fed you?”

“Some.”

“Good. We’re moving.”

“Where?”

“Does it matter?”

“No, I guess not. Was hoping to know what this is all about. Try to make sense of it.”

Soren spun on her heels and walked briskly outside. Two Keepers brought Dee and Marco to the waiting SUV. In seconds, they were on the road again and heading west towards the Southern Alps. Soren always likened them to a row of spikes found on the back of a Stegosaurus. They split the South Island right down the middle. Mount Hutt came within view before Soren broke the silence.

“I read about you. Impressive.”

Dee looked up, frowned and said, “Okay. I don’t know what you mean, but whatever.”

“Mahana keeps good records. He had nothing but nice things to say. Pity you gave it away.”

“I had Marco, George and Sophie to look after, if it’s any of your business.”

“Thought a strong independent woman like you would want it all.”

Dee shook her head. “Ridiculous.”

“What is?”

“People like you.”

“Me?”

“Yes. You still grasp on to some outdated ideals that no longer matter. I saw and heard your soldiers talking. Some of them have big mouths.”

“We’re not trying to hide anything. Keepers of the Nation is not some shadow organisation. We simply want to protect what we built.”

“Like I said. Ridiculous.”

Soren grinned. She liked Dee more and more. The Mercedes SUV was waved through a couple of checkpoints along a sweeping gravel road that curved upwards into the Southern Alps.
